Obituary

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Bill McNeney passed peacefully at home on August 26, surrounded by his family.

Going through the family photos showed how the family activities revolved around fishing, skiing, and, more recently, boating up and down the beautiful BC coast.

A long-time member of the Squamish Rotary club, Bill epitomized their mission "... to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders." Bill was full of life, loved people and was always willing to commit his considerable energy to helping others. He spent countless hours raising money for good causes in the community, such as health care, youth and family programs. Small projects had a way of growing with Bill. He didn't *just* volunteer. Starting out as parent volunteer with the Nancy Greene ski league somehow turned into a life-long commitment to ski racing, with his work with the Whistler World Cup and across Canada with Alpine Canada.

Bill always led by example, and though he was always ready with a moral story appropriate to the occasion, he tended not to give direct advice. However, if we were to get one last pearl of wisdom from him, it might be: hug your loved ones and find some small way to give back to your community.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Squamish Hospice Society.

We have lost too many of our Snowsports family this year.
Bill was instrumental in bringing real engineering science and process to Alpine Ski Racing, along with an incredible amount of passion and volunteerism. We first met while we were both involved in the Nancy Greene Ski League and work closely as we both got deeper and deeper into Alpine Racing.
Bill, along with Owen Carney, became the quintessential Local Race Organizers and became world renown for their work, particularly with respect to race safety and course preparation. Bill was amongst the early leaders who brought engineering and science to Racer safety, proper design and installation of safety system’s and proper, scientific use of “snow hardener”. All universally adopted around the world. Bill went on to become an Alpine Canada advisor/race quality expert, teaching organizers across the country. Bill and Pauline raised 2 wonderful kids. Our hearts are with Pauline, Brad, Lisa

I worked with Bill at BC Hydro and over many years we worked on technical and other problems related to our BC Hydro employment. Bill was always fun to work with and a pleasure to assist him whenever there was an opportunity. Bill talked about his involvement in skiing and outdoor activities over lunch on many occasions. I haven't run into Bill in over 20 years, but many good memories to look back at.

From 1977 to 1995 Christina and I had the pleasure of being Bill & Pauline’s next door neighbours. Bill and I also both worked at BC Hydro. I look forward to sharing some our fond memories working and playing together at the Celebration of Life.

I had the privilege to get to know Bill through out mutual attraction to boating. It was a joy to see Bill's friendly and ever-helpful face on the docks and know that a lively, wide ranging and fun conversation was at hand. He had wide interests and concerns. He put his shoulder to many wheels and helped make things better for others.
His work on behalf of the Squamish Yacht Club was extremely important and represented only a small part of the many things that he did.
As we might say in Ireland, ar dheis Dè go raibh a n-anam. May his soul be in God's right hand.
Deepest condolences to Pauline and all the family.
