Obituary for Sulo Makela

Sulo Makela, age 96, resident of Brackendale, BC, passed away at the Sea to Sky Community Hospice on October 16, 2019 with his beloved daughter, Lorraine, by his side.

Sulo was born on July 13, 1923 in Karunki, Finland. When he was 4 years old he and his mother, Fanni, travelled here to Canada and moved to Saskatchewan where they lived with the Kallio family for many years.
Once Erik Makela joined Fanni and Sulo’s life, their family grew bigger. Sulo had 3 siblings and his cousin, Willard to grow up with.

His early years were on the farm in Saskatchewan but eventually he found his way to Ontario. He has many stories of his days as a teenager in Port Arthur and Geraldton. Ever the charmer and ingenious guy, he had his drivers’ licence since he was 14 and drove delivery trucks all over the city.

He met the love of his life, Verna Yoki and they married and started their family in Geraldton, where they lived for many years. He worked at a mine camp, Anaconda north of town and the family joined him there every summer. They had much fun over the years with great fishing and exploring.

In 1967, he and Verna moved out to Brittania Beach and his life in B.C. began. He worked at the mine in Brittania until it closed and then they moved to Brackendale where he has lived ever since.

Sulo’s love for his family was immense. He will be lovingly missed by his daughter Lorraine (Mark Soucy) and his grandchildren Robert (Sonni) Anderson, Janice Anderson, Kim Toskovich (Mark), Clark Furlong, Kris Anderson (Wanda), Russell Anderson, and Erika Harvey, his brother, Jerry Makela, and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and his Squamish extended family. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Verna, his daughter Sylvia and son-in-law Jack Anderson, his daughter Sharon, and his parents, Fanni and Erik.
Services were held on October 23, 2019. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sulo’s name to the Squamish Hospice Society with a direction to the Sea to Sky Community Hospice.
