These last few years with Dad have been simultaneously difficult and beautiful.

Dad was intelligent, philosophical and curious. We knew that Alzheimer's would start to dissolve some of those qualities. This was the difficult part.

But Dad was also helpful, grateful and affectionate and we were never robbed of that in these final years with Dad.

It was he and Mom who taught us over all these years how to be helpful to others. They set such a good example that it was not hard to follow suit.

I have so many fond memories of Dad in the theme of helpfulness. Dad was the guy who would wake up and make sure coffee was on for everyone before they got up. Dad was the guy who would meet you at the car to haul groceries inside. Dad was the man standing next to you with the dish towel waiting for the next dish to dry. Dad stacked and chopped firewood until his elbows ached and he did things like that until his very last day with us.

Mom tells me that the day before he passed away, a housekeeper at the hospital was busy doing her work and Dad placed his hand on hers as if to say "thank you for doing what I cannot". And without words, as they became fewer recently, he showed his appreciation for the small gestures people made to make life better for him.

Dad was eternally grateful for a hug. His big blue eyes would light up when the grandkids showed up and shared a bag of chips or started a pillow fight at the care home. When we would announce to him that any of his kids or grandkids were going to be visiting he said "really", in delight.

In these ways and many more, life with Dad was beautiful.

Uncle Roger was a funny, kind and caring man. He always had time for a hug and a joke, when I was young and now with my kids as they were growing up too. I have memories of him telling me his favourite sandwich was mustard and maracino cherries (this can't be true, can it? But in my childhood mind it made him amazing!). He was always up for a little adventure, whether exploring a new place or going for a hike or showing us a favourite spot. He was optimistic and saw the bright side of life. He was very loved and will be missed! Our love & prayers are with you all! Kirsten, Matthew, Haley & Annika
