Obituary for Mary Merchant Sturgeon (Merchant)

Mary Merchant Sturgeon

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Merchant Sturgeon on November 21, 2020, in Squamish. She was born on February 29, 1932, in Morristown, New Jersey, and had an exciting early life living abroad as the daughter of a diplomat. She focused her adult years on child and adult education. She is survived by her son Bob (Cheryl), daughter Leslie (Fabio), her brother Livingston (Cigdem), grandchildren Huntington and Bella, daughter-in-law Toshiko, cousins, nieces and nephews, and step-children.

A graduate of Bryn Mawr (1953), life-long lover of writing, and founder of the Santa Cruz Learning Center, Mary moved from California to Vancouver Island with her second husband Harry Sturgeon to continue their professional testing and tutoring services. After a retirement in the Interior, Mary moved to Squamish following Harry’s death ten years ago. She greatly enjoyed living with her son and his family, visiting relatives abroad, and visiting her many favorite lunch spots in the community. She will be greatly missed by her beloved family and the wonderful friends she enjoyed knowing over the course of a full and interesting life. The family would like to thank sincerely Dr Malherbe and the Diamond Head Medical staff, along with Dr Cranston and the wonderful nurses and staff at Hilltop House who supported her peaceful passing.

In lieu of flowers, Mary would have deeply appreciated donations to any charity that may be desired to be made in her name.
