Obituary for Joyce Ann Tomboulian

Joyce Tomboulian, of Victoria, BC, Canada, passed away peacefully while holidaying in Whistler with her beloved family on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at the age of 77.

Joyce was born to parents, Alfred and Evelyn Lavik, on December 13, 1941, in Williston, North Dakota, U.S.A. She grew up as the eldest of three, a diligent student and wizard of baking and sewing, decorated often at 4-H club state fair competitions.

Joyce attended the University of Minnesota where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and met her first love, Larry Tomboulian. Together, they made the bold move to Vancouver, BC, gave birth to their son, Justin, and naturalized as Canadian citizens.

Choosing a path of independence, Joyce then focused on developing her career and became a Certified Management Accountant. Her grasp of financial management & systems combined with her belief in the intrinsic role of government to society, elevated her to Financial Controller of the City of Calgary and the peak of her professional life.

After retiring early, Joyce enjoyed travelling the globe, hiking and birdwatching with her friends, and spending quality time with her granddaughter, Cora. She lent her experience and energy, volunteering as Treasurer and Board Member for several fortunate non-profit organizations.

Joyce reveled in knowledge, ideas and intellectual debate. She was a lover of nature, mountains, music, culture and cute fuzzy creatures. We admired her life-long service to environmental, humanist and social institutions. Truly, Joyce lived a productive, active and cheerful life right up until her very last day with us.

Joyce is survived by her son, Justin, her daughter-in-law, Cannis, her granddaughter, Cora, her previous husband, Larry, her sister, Laurie, her brother, Jeff, as well as her many nieces, nephews, cousins and endearing friends.

As per her wishes, Joyce has been cremated. The family sincerely thanks the Squamish Funeral Chapel & Crematorium for releasing her soul on Saturday, March 2, 2019. In celebration of Joyce’s life, there will be a Remembrance Service held in Victoria, BC in the spring time with more details to be announced later.

Besides condolences, donations in her memory, instead of flowers, are deeply appreciated to: David Suzuki Foundation, Victoria Secular Humanists, BC Naturalists’ Foundation,Council of Canadians.
