Hazel Gould (nee McKenzie) died peacefully in her sleep on August 5th, 2021. She was born on June 14, 1932 in Brownvale Alberta.
Hazel was pre-deceased by her husband Raymond of 56 years, and is survived by her daughters Linda (Dave) and Susan (Rob), and son Brian (Lana). She is also survived by her grandchildren Christine (Christopher), Jason (Emily), Keelan, Neva, Annika, Chloe and Great-grandchildren William, Noah, Callum, Myra, and nephews James Coy, and Roderick and Richard Murray. She was predeceased by her older sister Isabel (R.E. Coy), who died in 1987.
Hazel grew up on the family farm in Brownvale, AB, and went to school in a one room schoolhouse that accommodated Grade 1 to 12. She started developing her work and business skills working as everything from gas jockey to accountant at the local gas station operated by Walter Rayda. After graduating high school at 16 years old, Hazel moved to Edmonton to attend the University of Edmonton and completed a degree in Geohysics in 1952. This subsequently led her to the oil-patch in Alberta where she met her husband Raymond, who was also working in the oil business. After marrying in 1955 in Calgary, they both left their jobs and started the Tall Girl Shop Ltd retail clothing store for tall women. Their expanding and successful business led them to Toronto, Ontario in 1986. In 2009, they retired to Victoria, BC to be close to family. In 2016, Hazel moved to Squamish, BC to be close to her son’s family and growing Grandchildren.
Hazel lived a full life that that was centred around her business and family. It also included many adventures and travels. These included a trip to England with a girlfriend in 1953, several trips with her family to Hawaii and the Caribbean, trips to Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, Fiji, Bali, Thailand, and other exotic destinations. She sailed the Bahamas and Virgin Islands with her family in the late 70s on their 41-foot family sailboat. She also enjoyed scuba diving, skiing, and swimming.
A small private family gathering will be held this week, and a celebration of her life will occur virtually online as well as in Victoria, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences for the family may be offered at https://www.squamishfuneralchapel.com/runtime.php?SiteId=21715&NavigatorId=127077
