Obituary

Farmer, fisherman, musician, carpenter, family man, friend, Elmer was a man of many talents and accomplishments. He built his own fishing boat, learned to play the saxophone and piano, developed a keen ear for listening to other people’s stories and cultivated crops and an optimistic, positive spirit. At 94, Elmer decided to leave Pemberton, his home for sixty-six years, to move to assisted living in Squamish, where he might have a more active social life. He made many more friends in his short time in Squamish. Survived by Dave and Sue Hellevang (Sankey), Connie (Hellevang) and Gary Sobchak, Heather (grand-daughter) and Graham Haywood and Ryan (grandson) and Venetia Hellevang (Ho Chen) as well as countless friends and many loving extended family members, Elmer leaves a lasting legacy of happiness. He passed on the same day as his son, Chris Hellevang and was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Hellevang.

Elmer was a wonderful person and a valued member of the upper Pemberton Valley community. I had the pleasure of working the Turnip havest and potato planting for the Hellevangs back in my teen years. He was a very pleasant person to work for with his calm friendly manner. He did run over me once. I was on the potato planter and my foot slipped off the little foot support just when he went to back up. My foot got caught under the tire and immediately yanked me off of my seat and onto the ground. Fortunately the ground was very soft and no harm was done. Elmer was very apologetic, kind and gentle.

I feel very honored to have known Elmer and shared in some small part in his life.

Dear Dave, Sue, Connie and all Family Members:
So sorry to about Elmer's passing. Although I have been away from Pemberton for many years, it was no surprise to see from his photo that he had the same sparkle that I remembered. I hope you have many wonderful memories of his life and times with you to help with your loss.
