Obituary for Ellen Hall
June 30, 1933 – February 16, 2020
Ellen Barbour Hall passed away peacefully the morning of February 16, 2020 in Hilltop House in Squamish, BC at 86 years of age. She was born on June 30, 1933 to Bert and Mabel Barbour in Invermere, BC.
Ellen attended high school in Invermere, BC and after graduation worked in the office for S. Ronacher & Son Ltd. Lumber Manufacturing Company.
Ellen married Clarence Hall on October 8, 1955 and they had five children, Mona (Mike), Ken (Carrie), Kelly (Kari), Kurt (Carmen) and Monica (Brad). The family moved to the Sunshine Coast in 1965, settling in Gibsons, BC, where Ellen kept a garden, canned her produce, sewed clothing for her children, picked salal for a florist supplier, managed her youngest son’s little league baseball team and attended endless soccer games in the rain.
In 1973, Ellen moved to New Westminster/Burnaby to finish raising her children as a single parent. She worked as an accounting clerk for various companies in the Vancouver/Lower Mainland area, all while upgrading her skills in accounting and management at Douglas College night classes and later computer studies at BCIT.
In addition to her career, her studies and raising her children, Ellen kept a garden, preserved her harvest, continued to sew and was active in her church. Ellen worked for Pacific Coast Terminals for 17 years before retiring.
She volunteered her time to the Green Coat Program at the Vancouver International Airport Authority before moving to Squamish. There, she occupied herself with gardening at the Cedars (Senior Citizens Housing), and volunteered her time and energy to the Squamish Community Policing Office; Crime Prevention Programs; Citizens Patrol Network Program; and the Senior’s Citizens Association of British Columbia (Squamish Branch).
Ellen is survived by four of her five children, 17 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; one brother, Earl Barbour; two former sons-in-law, Neil and Wayne, and a former daughter-in-law, Janice.
She was preceded in death by her parents Bert and Mabel Barbour; one brother, Harold Barbour; three sisters, Dorothy Quinn, Anne Stevenson, and Edna Godlien; her son, Kelly Hall; and her former husband, Clarence Hall.
Ellen was an avid gardener; talented baker whose raspberry bars were unrivalled; skilled quilter and seamstress who specialized in “Nana Pajamas”; enthusiastic hiker who climbed the “Chief”; recreational golfer; dedicated community volunteer; and keen traveller, especially throughout the Middle East and parts of Europe. She was a much beloved Mom, Mom-in-Law, Nana, and Grand-Nana.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Kurt and Carmen Hall’s home in Coquitlam, BC.
