Obituary for Betty Hinkema
Suddenly on February 6, 2020 Betty (Elizabeth) Jane Hinkema née Martens passed away.
Lovingly remembered by her husband of almost 47 years Jan; daughters Dana (Alan), Allys (Brent) and her grandchildren Alicia, Melanie, Luke, Sam and Hunter. Her sister Connie (John) Peters, nieces and nephews, many cousins and special friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Frank and Helen Martens; her parents-in-law Gerrit and Hendrikje Hinkema; her brother- in-law Hein Hinkema and sister-in-law Marie Hinkema
Betty was born in Winkler, Manitoba on June 4, 1947. She grew up and attended school in the small prairie village of Lowe Farm, Manitoba. Growing up in Lowe Farm Betty spent her childhood surrounded by her grandparents, aunts, uncles and many cousins. After graduating high school Betty moved to Winnipeg and attended nursing school at St. Boniface Hospital. She made many life-long friends at Nursing School.
Shortly after completing her nursing diploma she moved to Red Lake, Ontario where she worked for a year. After purchasing her dream car, a 1969 Chevelle, she made a big move and came to Vancouver, BC. She first worked at Vancouver General Hospital and then moved to St. Paul. While working at St. Paul Hospital in Vancouver she met Jan Hinkema.
Jan and Betty were married in Squamish, B.C. on April 28, 1973. They celebrated their wedding surrounded by family and friends from across Canada and Holland. Three years into their marriage they welcomed their first daughter Dana and then three years later they had Allys.
Betty started working at Squamish General Hospital in 1973. She loved her work and the people she worked with. She moved to Hilltop House for the last years of her career before retiring in 2007.
Jan and Betty spent a lot of time camping and traveling across Canada and around the world. Betty loved to plan and organise their holidays from start to finish.
Betty’s greatest joy were her grandchildren. She loved spoiling them with her time and attention.
A memorial service and reception will be held at the Squamish Funeral Chapel on Friday, February 21 at 2:00 p.m.
