Obituary for "Betty" Sara Elizabeth Burton

With the heaviest of hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Betty Burton at age 85 in Powell River, BC. Betty was born in Toronto, Ontario to Alfred and Jessie Harper. Betty was raised on the family farm in Brampton, Ontario. She grew up active in the 4H club where she developed a love of gardening. Betty was a natural artist, photographer, and lifelong learner. A keen businesswoman, she opened her first store, Betty’s Variety Store, in Guelph, Ontario in 1965. Betty was a loving mother to Brian and Brenda. Strong and independent, Betty and her two children moved to B.C. in 1970 where they settled in North Vancouver. In 1980, Betty settled in beautiful Squamish, a place she would happily call home and where she made many lifelong friends. In 2012, Betty moved to Powell River to be close to her family. Her joy for life and faith was felt by all who were blessed to be her family and friends.

Betty is reunited with her parents Alfred and Jessie Harper, son Brian Burton, brother Bill Harper, and friend Gillian Dennis. Betty will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Brenda Burton (Ed), granddaughters Kristin Leigh, Courtney Leigh (Jesse) and Brenda’s sister Tammy. Betty will be dearly missed by her great-grandchildren Cameron, Josephine, James, and Harper. She will always be remembered by her dear friend Eileen Patterson and her children Beth, Barry and Beccie. This was a friendship Betty treasured for over 60 years.

Betty was our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt and best friend to us all. She was always ready for a game of cards or a trip to the casino. Betty could often be found with her hands deep in her garden. She represented B.C. at the National 5 pin Bowling Championship in 1994 where her Squamish team won the gold medal. Betty’s sparkling personality and smile, lit up every room she entered. Her laugh was infectious and we will miss it so much. She was our strength, our family's heart and soul. The family will be forever grateful for the love, friendship and phenomenal care from Dr. Dohm and from Willingdon Creek Village. We could not have asked for better.

A memorial service will be held for Betty on April 30 at 1:00pm at the Squamish Funeral Chapel, Garibaldi Highlands, Squamish, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Powell River Hospice Society or The Terry Fox Foundation.

Squamish Funeral Chapel is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
